Breadsticks

I got this recipe from Nancy Hurst. She brought us dinner the day that we moved, and she paired these delicious bread sticks with a yummy cheesy potato soup that had red pepper flakes in it. Comfort food at its best!

BREADSTICKS
1 T yeast
1 c milk, scalded (heated until little bubbles form along the side, but not boiling!)
2 T sugar
1 beaten egg
1 square butter
parmesan cheese
1/2 c warm water
2 T shortening
1 t salt
3 1/2 c flour
garlic salt

Dissolve yeast in warm water. In large bowl, put scalded milk (cooled), shortening, sugar, egg, and salt. Add yeast mixture. Add flour and beat. Cover and let rise until doubled. Punch down. Pinch off small amounts, and roll into long strips. Lay lengthwise in greased casserole pan. Melt 1 square of butter, and brush over bread sticks (you can layer, but brush each one) then sprinkle with garlic salt. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese, then rise, covered, until doubled (about an hour) and bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes.
